What are Smart Meters?

The new generation of gas and electricity meters

Smart meters are a new kind of energy meter. They will replace existing electric and gas meters and come with in-home displays, allowing consumers to control and monitor energy usage in terms of what it is costing in real time.

During the foundation stage of the roll-out, the government created Smart Energy GB. It is the national campaign for the roll-out tasked with helping people understand smart meters and how they can use the meters to get gas and electricity usage under control.

Nationwide Smart Meter rollout

Mandatory roll out across GB creates huge employment demand

The government has announced a national roll-out of around 50 million smart meters, to be fitted in over 26 million households across Wales, Scotland and England by the end of 2020. As the biggest national infrastructure project in our lifetime, it has also created a huge employment demand and to meet this installation challenge there will be requirement to train over 10,000 new certified meter engineers.

A growing demand for qualified installers

There is huge demand for new engineers within the smart metering industry

With this demand for new certified engineers comes new job opportunities all over the UK.

The industry will require over 10,000 new entrants over the next few years. With the installation stage starting in 2016 we are already actively training new entrants and up-skilling existing Gas engineers to be fully certified to fit smart meters.

Each of our training courses comes with a 100% guaranteed work placement and a job interview with an industry recognised employer.
